Good Nutrition Helps Record Breaking Power Lifter
Real Nutrition helped make me a lean record breaking powerlifter.
I first contacted Jacquie a number of years ago when I had been weight training for a few years and was looking at getting lean. The results were fast and effective, but I was particularly impressed in how thorough and knowledgeable Jacquie was and how much I learnt about nutrition and health in the process. A few years later I was achieving excellent results as a drug-free competitive powerlifter, but I was somewhat unsure about the prevailing ideas about nutrition (or should I say lack of ideas) in the sport. Most people worked with the idea that, in order to be strong, you just eat lots of food, the more the better; lots of protein, but from sources like hamburgers, pizza, sausages etc; plenty of fat and sugar too. This seemed wrong to me, but I followed the status quo to a degree and achieved good results (I won the state and national championships in my weight division). My weight went from 98kg to 112kg over 12 months.
In August 2006 I contacted Jacquie again and asked the following question: Can you make me leaner AND stronger? She answered yes and I set to work straight away. With her in Auckland and me in Melbourne, we stayed in contact via email. I went to my local gym, organised weekly skin-fold measurements and weigh ins. My target was the Oceania Bench Press champs in December. Slowly and steadily my weigh came down and as it did my energy levels went up and I felt stronger each week. Once again, I learnt more about my body and how to eat healthily as I lost weight. The last few weeks before the competition I could hardly believe how good I felt and how lean and muscular I had become. The fat was gone and I was looking like a bodybuilder. On competition day I weighed in at 99.5kg, some 12 kilograms less than I had been four and half months before, many of my competitors could hardly believe the transformation. I felt great and performed well: I benched 235kgs, breaking the Australian record by 10kgs and the Oceania record by 7.5kgs. I now feel like nothing can hold me back. With help from Real Nutrition I plan to go to the world champs in Austria in November 2007.
