As a young fella I was pretty active, athletics, working in the building trade etc…I always thought I was pretty fit and healthy even into my late 30’s. I always knew that there could be areas for improvement – slightly better food choices and less alcohol for example! However nothing prepared me for what my doctor told me after having a recent check up.
- My cholesterol reading was over 7; with an LDL reading of 4.1mmol/l. (that’s the bad cholesterol).
- My blood pressure was high enough for my doctor to consider putting me on medication.
- I also had high levels of uric acid in my blood, and early signs of poor thyroid function.
- My liver function was hugely elevated which could have caused problems later on in life.
My initial thoughts were: I’m only 38 years old, these test results are consistent with someone much older than that!
Enter Real Nutrition. My wife had been seeing Rachel at Real Nutrition for a few weeks, so I thought I’d tag along to see what I could learn. I decided to sign up with her and see how it went. Rachel constructed me a healthy eating plan and recommended breaking into some gentle exercise. I followed the plan carefully (with a couple of minor hiccups!) and began running again – nothing too strenuous.
The eating plan was quite varied and I was actually surprised at how much I had to eat. That was in October 2006. I visited Real Nutrition 3 times between the 12th of November and the 9th of December. On the 15th of December I had the same tests taken again, the results were as follows.
- Total cholesterol 5.9mmol/l, LDL cholesterol 3.8mmol/l. (Down from total cholesterol of 7.0mmol/l, LDL cholesterol of 3.8mmol/l. )
- My blood pressure was lowered enough to not require medication (Reduced from 170/105 to 128/85)
- Uric acid level 0.35mmol/l, down from 42mmol/l.
- Liver function results: GGT 408 units, reduced to 80 units. ALT 284 units, reduced to 72 units. AST 137 IU/L, reduced to 37 IU/L.
- Thyroid function results: TSH 4.4 units/ml, reduced to 2.8 units/ml.
I’m now converted, and thanks to Real Nutrition educating me on how to make smarter food choices, I’ll be able to keep myself healthy on the inside for a long time. What started as a serious wake up call has become an educational process that will keep me healthy for life. It was a huge return on investment.
Thanks! Stu Airs.
