It has been claimed that the risk of obesity increases with pregnancy, and the number of child births. This is either due to the constant exposure to the fat storing hormones of pregnancy, reduced activity, or increased opportunity to eat more.

Maintenance of physical activity and attention to nutrition, therefore are most important to ensure a return to normal fat levels. A healthy weight gain of 10-12 kgs during pregnancy is recommended.The two principle hormones secreted during pregnancy are Progesterone and Estrogen, other hormones are responsible for increasing blood glucose levels, increasing calcium absorption, and nitrogen retention.

Pregnancy, pre– pregnancy and post pregnancy are important times to focus on good nutritional habits

  • Don’t fad diet
  • Stop using alcohol
  • Keep hydrated,
  • Drink 2-3 l water per day
  • Ensure you get plenty of fibre
  • Increase your lean protein serves Your body needs minerals, especially calcium. Vitamin C is important too, especially if breastfeeding.
  • Essential fats are important, for baby, and for your hormonal system, skin and cells
  • Reduce highly processed foods and sugary drinks or snacks.
  • Remain active.
  • Reduce caffeine.
  • Take a good pregnancy multi-vitamin.

A 10—12 kg weight gain during pregnancy is recommended, seeing a real nutrition coach on a regular basis through out the 40 week term, will ensure you are getting enough nutrients for your self and your baby. We will also monitor your body fat levels and your metabolism, and aim for a fit healthy pregnancy. Indigestion and constipation are common throughout pregnancy, it is easier to eat small meals at regular intervals, including plenty of fibre to encourage digestion. Fluid retention is common in the third trimester, good hydration is particularly important so remember to drink lots of water. In the ideal world we should be at a healthy weight prior to pregnancy, if this isn’t the case, then weight management is an important goal, having your body fat monitored is the best way to avoid losing your body to motherhood.
