It all started for me whilst trying to impersonate Kelly Slater on a wave on the Gold Coast. The net result of an aerial gone wrong was a fractured spine. (Compression fracture L3, to be exact!!) At the time, I thought my life was over, in hindsight it was the wake up call that I needed.
My employers were very understanding, and gave me 10 weeks paid leave. Instead of sitting at home feeling sorry for myself I decided to learn more, and enrolled in a fitness leader’s certification course. It was a real turning point for me, as not only was I learning the basic theories of anatomy, physiology, and how the body works, I was also applying the theories to myself whilst healing my broken body. Weight training was a staple part of my rehabilitation. It was something I’d never done before; I soon came to thrive in the gym environment. Although I’d competed at surfing, surf lifesaving, and triathlons, I’d never done any resistance training before. I was impressed with the immediate results. Similarly I’d never played much attention to what I ate. I was always of the mindset that as long as I was training consistently, I could pretty much eat what I want. This mindset turned out to be way off! Upon returning to NZ in the mid 1990’s I got a job as a PT at Les Mills in central Auckland. I was also studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce. Unfortunately the training was reduced significantly, whilst the eating remained the same, and the body was starting to show it! It was around this time that I met Jacquie. Through her expert advice I was able to get my 20 year old body back, even though I’m now in my mid 40’s. I owe her a lot.
It would seem that we have evolved past the “information age,” we are now entering the “what am I going to do with all this information?” era. Despite this, there still seem to be an abundance of bad advice out there. My passion is to assist you to reach your physical goals. I am willing to share and pass on my 18 years of experience of consistent exercise. In short, I know what works and can confidently deliver a programme that will work for you. If you don’t believe me, take a look at my pictures……through consistent exercise, and structured nutrition, I intend to look like this when I’m 70!!! I may even make a surfing comeback……look out Kelly Slater!
