Fruit Juice Not So Good
A recent study published in the journal Pediatrics, revealed that the higher a child’s juice intake, the greater the gain in body fat over time. The summary revealed the weight gain applied more to children who were prone to putting on weight, and on the verge of being classified as overweight. In contrast children who ate whole fruit, (instead of drinking juice) put on less body weight.

The problem: Juices typically contain sugar, which makes them higher in calories.

The results are based on data gathered from 2800 children aged between 1-4 years. Data was gathered on their dietary intake, their height and weight was recorded every 6 months for a 4 year period.

Most of the popular brands of boxed fruit juices contain 100 or more calories, so two or more servings of these a day can add up to a significant amount. Source: NZ Herald.

New Zealanders eat about 100 million pies a year.
Now Tui have come up with a way to get us drinking a beer with our pie, The pies come in three flavours - mince and cheese, mince, and steak and cheese - and each contains 6% Tui beer.

"We'll be selling Tui tucker in all good food outlets, supermarkets, bars and tuckshops across the country. With a dash of Tui, we know they will be hot property," said DB Breweries commercial manager, Nick Rogers.

He said Tuimato Sauce was a success earlier this year, and pies were a natural next step.

Tui brand manager Jarrod Bear said pies are a national institution, and adding Tui to the mix makes perfect sense. (we don't think so)

Tui pies will retail for $4 at food outlets and Caltex service stations nationwide.

Check your beans

We don't want to put you off your beans because we think they are one of the healthiest vegetables, but it may pay to check your batch number though if you eat frozen beans - here's why, - Watties has withdrawn one batch of packs of "choice cut" frozen beans after an Auckland woman reported finding what looks to be a mouse's head in one. "I thought it was a little husk or something so I took it out of the microwave and pulled it out, it had eyes looking back at me, which was incredibly nauseating, I thought if this is your head where exactly is the rest of you?," she told reporters. Heinz-Watties say the beans were grown and packaged in Canterbury and occasionally wildlife does get into food products. Watties has undertaken a precautionary withdrawal of the batch of green beans that the offending packet came from. The batch number is 88270.10, with a best before date of 26 September 2010. Check your beans.
